Dr. Peter McIlveen

Dr. Peter McIlveen considers himself a lifelong learner. There is always more to learn and the more one learns, the more satisfying and enriching one will find their life. After completing an undergraduate degree in both Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Dr. McIlveen worked as an engineer for ten years until he decided to follow his passion and pursue a career in medicine.

Dr. Peter McIlveen received his Medical Degree from the University of Connecticut. He graduated as a Fleeson Scholar and received honors in Obstetrics and Gynecology. As a student, he conducted research on Monoamniotic Twins and amniotic fluid glucose measurements, both of which were published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Peter McIlveen completed his residency at Orlando Regional Medical Center in 2003.

Currently as an Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Dr. McIlveen delivers babies, performs a variety surgeries, and treats a wide range of conditions. Some of the conditions Dr. McIlveen treats are as follows:

Procedures are commonly performed by Dr. McIlveen in the office setting, which can be considerably beneficial to patients in terms of out-of-pocket costs as well as convenience. These procedures include hysteroscopy, endometrial ablation and permanent surgical sterilization. Essure is a permanent birth control procedure that is performed with no incisions; it causes changes in a female’s body that induce barriers to form which prevent pregnancy. NovaSure and ThermaChoice are quick, safe, simple endometrial ablation procedures to lighten or stop periods, without the side effects of hormones. In fact they are hormone-free and also involve no incisions. They take only minutes to perform in the comfort of the office. Other procedures Dr. McIlveen provides include complex cystometric testing of the bladder as well as 2D, 3D and 4D ultrasound.


One of the reasons Dr. McIlveen became a doctor was to improve the medical field. He believes that truly listening to patients is one of the most important parts of a diagnosis. Some problems not only persist, but worsen when they are not properly treated. Dr. Peter McIlveen has always been a passionate, trailblazer in his field because he believes anything is possible if your put your mind to it. He was the first physician in Elkin to perform uterine ablation surgeries commonly known as endometrial ablations. Dr. McIlveen has also been fascinated with infertility. He has helped many families who have had difficulties having a family to successfully procreate. He is one of the very few OB/GYN’s that is also a board certified obesity medicine doctor. After noticing multiple weight problems with his patients after pregnancy, he studied to become certified in Obesity Medicine so he can better aid his patients, both with treatment and prevention.

Dr. Peter McIlveen is a Most Compassionate Doctor Award 5 Year Honoree. Additionally, Dr. McIlveen has a track record of earning the Patients’ Choice Award every year. Both the Most Compassionate Doctor award and the Patients’ Choice award are selected by reviews and ratings on the Vitals medical services review site.

Dr. McIlveen is a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He understands the importance of exercising ones voice in government, both on local and national levels, and most recently called upon Elkin Tribune readers to support the PALs Act and protect women’s access to mammograms.
